Dr. Luis Espinoza attended Medical School at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Lima, Peru, and is Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Section of Rheumatology at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans. After completing a clinical rheumatology fellowship at Barnes Hospital, Washington University, St. Louis, MO and Royal Victoria Hospital, McGill University, Montreal, PQ, Canada, and a two-year post-doctoral immunology research fellowship at the Rockefeller University, New York City, NY, he returned to Montreal and joined the Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine of the Royal Victoria Hospital, McGill University School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Medicine.
Dr. Espinoza’s research has focused primarily on furthering the understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA), with special emphasis on environmental and immunogenetic factors, and also with emphasis on therapeutic aspects. His initial research work was supported by the Canadian Arthritis Society and subsequently by the National Institute of Health.
Dr. Espinoza has published over 345 peer-reviewed publications, 230 book chapters and review publications, and over 400 abstracts. Original contributions to PsA include recognition of the distinct histopathological characteristics of the synovial membrane, especially vascular involvement, role of growth factors and cytokines in its pathogenesis, identification of genetic markers associated with PsA (HLA-B38), and potential role of infectious agents on its pathogenesis.
Dr. Luis Espinoza has served as President of the Pan American League Against Rheumatism (PANLAR), and also served as Chair of the International League of Associations for Rheumatology (ILAR). In addition, he has been honored with several distinctions including the Pauling Phelps Award from the American College of Rheumatology, Masterships from the American College of Physicians, American College of Rheumatology. In June 2014 Dr. Espinoza was guest of honor of the Italian Society for the Study of Psoriatic Arthritis, and was awarded the Verna Wright Prize for Psoriatic Arthritis Research. I have been a member of the Southern Society for Clinical investigation since 1979 and a member of the editorial board of The American Journal of the Medical Sciences since 1993.
